This guide will walk you through the steps to reset your company password, covering both employees who use Single Sign-On (SSO) and those who use a separate password for their main company account.
Part 1: Identifying Your Password Type
The steps you take depend on how you currently log in to your company applications (like email, HR tools, or internal platforms).
Scenario A: I use SSO (Single Sign-On)
How to tell: You likely sign in through a centralized login page (often branded with the SSO provider's logo, like Okta, Azure AD, or Ping Identity). You use one password to access multiple company applications.
Action: Proceed to Part 2A: SSO Password Reset.
Scenario B: I do NOT use SSO
How to tell: You have to enter your username and a specific password for each application you access. Your main company password is only for your primary account (e.g., your Windows or main email login).
Action: Proceed to Part 2B: Non-SSO Password Reset.
Part 2A: SSO Password Reset (Recommended)
If your company uses Single Sign-On, your password reset is handled through the centralized SSO portal, as this is the master password for all your work accounts.
Navigate to the SSO Portal: Go directly to your company's main sign-in page or the dedicated SSO self-service portal. (If you don't know the URL, check your company's internal IT documentation or ask a colleague.)
Select "Forgot Password": On the login screen, look for the link that says "Forgot Password" or "Need help signing in?".
Verify Your Identity: The system will ask you to verify who you are, typically by:
Entering your username or work email address.
Answering security questions you previously set up.
Receiving a one-time code via a registered personal email address or text message (if multi-factor authentication is configured).
Create a New Password: Once successfully verified, you will be prompted to enter and confirm your new password.
Tip: Ensure your new password meets the company's requirements (e.g., minimum length, use of upper/lower case, numbers, and symbols).
Log In: Use your new password to sign in to the portal. This new password will immediately work for all applications connected to the SSO system.
Part 2B: Non-SSO Password Reset
If you do not use SSO, your password reset is usually handled through the main platform (often the operating system/domain login screen or the primary email system).
Windows/Domain Login (Common Method):
If you are locked out of your computer, use the "Reset Password" or "Forgot Password" link/button on the Windows or macOS login screen (often near the password entry field).
Note: This feature must be enabled by your IT department and will require you to use an alternate verification method (security questions, phone code, etc.).
Web-Based Portal:
Navigate to your company's designated password management portal or the login page for your main email service (e.g., Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace).
Look for the "Forgot Password" link.
Verification: Similar to the SSO process, you will need to:
Enter your username or email.
Complete a security check (e.g., answer questions or verify a code sent to a backup contact method).
Create a New Password: Set and confirm your new password, following all company security guidelines.
Synchronization: Since you do not use SSO, you may need to re-enter your new password into specific applications (like mobile devices, VPN clients, or cloud storage sync apps) that store your credentials separately.
Part 3: Still Having Trouble?
If the above steps do not work, or if you do not have a self-service option configured:
Contact the IT Help Desk: Reach out to the IT support team immediately. They have the administrative tools required to manually unlock your account or issue a temporary password.
Provide Details: When contacting IT, be ready to provide your full name and employee ID to verify your identity.
Remember: Never share your password with anyone, including IT support. The help desk will only provide a temporary one or guide you to reset your own.
